What to expect from Christmas in 2020

If you’re a person that loves Christmas, strap in as we predict a few things you’re likely to see more of this silly season. However, if you’re a person who believes the C word shouldn’t be uttered until after Halloween, then you’re going to need to close this tab and back away slowly from this blog.

Over in marketing land, Christmas planning is already in full swing – whether it’s over Zoom or a coffee catch-up, Christmas is front of mind for most. So, what will Christmas look like in 2020?

1.     Expect more QR Codes

Although it’s been a staple since 2017 (or iOS 11), the humble QR code hasn’t ever really taken off - until now! Expect to see many more QR codes this silly season, whether it’s to check-in to venues, show a ticket purchase, claim offers or access special features. The QR code is the flavour of the season and marketers are only getting more and more savvy on its many uses and applications.

2.     Push those platforms further

Marketers will be starting campaigns for Christmas sooner and pushing them harder than ever before. Over on the Facebook and Instagram, we expect to see more movement in the AR and VR space, Instant Experiences, Reels and Shopping – giving users more content, control and personalisation than ever before.

On WeChat, we’ll be looking for more ways to surprise and delight our customers. We’ll be exploring mini-games or apps, flash sales or special article features.

3.     Virtual visits

We’re all used to seeing Santa in the Shopping Centre, but what if that’s not possible this year without putting the health of our vulnerable community members at risk? Visit Santa virtually 🎅 Whether it’s a Zoom call, Facetime, augmented reality or virtual reality experience, Santa is still coming to town!

4.     Outdoor celebrations

As restrictions vary around the country, we’re lucky enough in NSW to start to see venue capacities open up, especially with regards to outdoor dining and outdoor events. Expect to see people itching to get outside and make the most of it – long days indoors have been getting to most of us. Whether it’s family friendly dining, summer sport or special experiences that make these summer nights more memorable, we’ll all be looking for a way to get outdoors and stay safe.

5.     Loving Local

If the COVID-19 crisis has taught us all anything, it’s about being grateful for what’s on your doorstep. Expect the community spirit to ramp up again this festive season. The local deli, the green grocer, the smiley barista – whether it’s gift hampers for family and friends or paying it forward to our favourite Hospo staff, we’d expect to see people staying close to home, loving local and saying THANKS this Christmas.

We can’t wait to celebrate this Christmas with our clients and communities! It’ll be a fantastic way to say bye to 2020 and welcome in a brand-new year, 2021 🥳
